Hello everybody, Just noticed this introduction section and though I would contribute and give a little introduction also. Been reading the forum for few months now. So I live in Finland, Helsinki, 29 years. Started cars maybe 6 years ago and have been driving on trackdays ever since. Earlier cars included Golf GTI, Leon Cupra R, Subaru STi -05. Now changed to two cars, so the daily driver and E30 M3 for all the fun with no need to compromise in the comfort area. Have driven the 'ring for about 100 laps and will be visiting that place many time in the future to come, had JK last year but this year only few laps. Have had my 1990 215hp M3 for 1 year now. This past season was mostly on getting to know the car and see what was in need of repair. But now I'm having a larger project this winter to repaint and restore the body, loosing all the extra weight and repairing all the little things that are not working so great. Also some additional reliabilitiy improvements, like oilpan baffle from Uwe last week. I'm build a blog site to our website, carfreaks.net, so there should be more info on the project late January. Here are some photos to go and might post one HDV incar video later, poor driving with broken gear shift llinkage and gear popping our, but nice quality of video Here are some photos of the car meanwhile:
love the sideways in the snow see you at the ring next year - diamondshwarz M3 - MUI 2382 Martin Welcome on board
Hi there and Welcome Looking at your picture here, that's about the only reason why I miss the snow =) Great shot BTW ! Thomas
You Finns seem to grow up on snow and ice, how on Earth did the UK produce two World Rally Champions? Goes without saying - Nice photo! Alan
;smilie[32] Could you post a spec of the car so far and what's planned for the future? Snow pic = ;smilie[76]
Nick, the spec at the moment is this Engine: 215hp model with DS-Motorsport chip (230hp?) New ignition wires (installed) New waterhoses (not yet ordered, OEM or Samco?) New expansion cap (installed) New temp sensors (installed) New lambda New seals for valve cover (get to be painted) New seals for oilpan (waiting) Oilpan baffle (waiting, from Uwe) Motul 300V 15w-50 oil (waiting) OEM filter (waiting) New 740iL mounts (waiting) S52 Timing chain tensioner (waiting) Exhaust: Eisenmann rear-box (ordered) Renew the hangers (have) Transmission: Had a problem of popping the 2nd and 4th gears when coming to a corner and braking hard. So now replacing: New E24 mounts (waiting) New OEM shifter components (bushings etc, waiting) New Z3 short-shifter (waiting) Custom carbon fibre long shifter stick with knob (have the stick) New seals while is out (some waiting) New center bearing (waiting) Clutch and bearing still waiting to be seen Suspension: At the moment Spax adjustable set from previous owner (maybe replace H&R Ring setup?) Should get adjustable top mounts Ordered H&R swaybars F+R Powerflex bushing for from+rear trailing arms Maybe the Muzzi aluminium -12mm subframe bushing for the rear (not yet ordered) Reinforce all the common places and repaint subframes and reartrailing arms Rear camber adjustment is still a question mark Z3 rear reinforcements (installed) Brakes: Steel lines all over (installed) Pagid RS-19 yellow pads all over (in the box) New OEM discs (not yet ordered) Motul RBF-600 fluid EVO3 cooling vents (carbon airhorns, waiting) Wheels: BWM OEM Style 5, refurbished last winter, gold center and polished lips, 17x8" and 17x9" 235/40-17 all-around, basic street rubber at the moment Body: New paint (not the original color, but don't ask Delete sunroof (maybe the cf panel if there is no FPR available) DTM mirros (not ordered, cf or fpr) FPR bonnet (coming from local race team) FPR rear hood (coming from local race team) EVO3 splitter/spoiler (not ordered) Flat underbody at some point? Interiour: Removed everything and putting back only: 2 Sparco EVO seats (waiting) TRS 4-point harnesses (waiting but would now like the 6-point models) OMP whell with spacer (have) Modify the rack so that it comes 5cm lower (i'm quite short) OMP 6 point bolt-in cage (have) Some extra bars to the cage (which ones?) Make the dash (don't know the english word) kind of furry like in rally cars to look more up-to-date and not reflect Relocate check control from roof to the dash Remove unneccessary electrics Removed all audio stuff Removed sound insulation and carpets / roof linings Carbon fibre DIY door cards (material available) Other: Deleted AC with all the components Light Redtop race battery (where to locate, maybe behind passenger seat to save some weight also in the battery cable?) Renew fueling stuff underside the car on the drivers side, looks pretty rusted. That is for what is currently and what should be coming is that I have now this winter the project to go through the body and make it light weight, so get all the cheap horses into play. Then build up the suspension and brakes and after that to some standalone ECU+cf-airbox+cams+springs. So this will the project car for many years to come. No hurry and either do it right that quickly So, any hints and ideas coming, please speak up I like to hear if I'm doing something stupid or it there are some simply things to for example now when all the wiring and engine is soon removed from the body.
Here is the small incar clip from our little 'ring in Finland called Ahvenisto. Nice track with some height changes and small safety areas. As you can see I have to keep the gear in for most of the low speed corners, hope this will be fixed for next year Incar (HD wmv, 100Mb)
Engine: leak down test on engine new oil pump and waterpump new rod bearings new oil cooler & t-stat if old one is not in good condition >215hp model with DS-Motorsport chip (230hp?) never heard of DS >New 740iL mounts (waiting) Group N engine & transmission mounts are an option, but stiffer. Stock engine with gr. N trannsmission mounts are ok too. >Exhaust: >Renew the hangers (have) also renew the hanger & donut just under the rear bumper cover between your tail pipes. >Transmission: >New Z3 short-shifter (waiting) hope its not the M-roadster shifter, that is much to short and notchy, I doubt it will be effective on a race track where a gear shift should be automatic something you dont have to concentrate on. >Custom carbon fibre long shifter stick with knob (have the stick) thats interesting. do you have a picture? >Suspension: >Maybe the Muzzi aluminium -12mm subframe bushing for the rear I wouldnt do that unless youre mounting everything solid, and if youre going to do that, then weld in the cage instead of bolting it in. If I were you Id forget about all these alum mounts. >Reinforce all the common places and repaint subframes and reartrailing arms good. >Brakes: >New OEM discs (not yet ordered) on stock calipers some owners are using bronze caliper guides. >EVO3 cooling vents (carbon airhorns, waiting) if you get a CF front bumper then the horns are integrated. then you need airhose to come in thru the side of the splash tray and to the caliper/brake disc. the front evo3 hole in the splash tray is only partially effective unless you want to cool the tires as well ... because that is where the air is dumped. >wheels: if your car is going to be very low and if you use later 17" wheels with 625-650 mm diameter you may run out of clearance on demanding tracks. >Body: >EVO3 splitter/spoiler (not ordered) have you ever seen a flossman splitter? I have pics in the gallery. it attaches to either a stock bumper or a CF bumper (CF bumpers are lower as they incorportate the evo3 undertray). This splitter goes back further underneath the engine for better aerodynamics. >Flat underbody at some point? good idea >Interiour: >TRS 4-point harnesses (waiting but would now like the 6-point models) perhaps your belt can be converted to a 6 point. if you have a cam loc attachment should be no problem. e.g. the basic schroth profi is 4 point with cam loc + optional 2 point. >OMP whell with spacer (have) what is that? >OMP 6 point bolt-in cage (have) >Some extra bars to the cage (which ones?) have a picture of the cage? >Make the dash (don't know the english word) kind of furry like in rally hmm. furry dash ghetto look? >Relocate check control from roof to the dash I would delete check control, it really is pretty useless. there is no critical info on there that you cant live without. your dash board will look cleaner as a result. >Remove unneccessary electrics good >Removed all audio stuff good >Removed sound insulation and carpets / roof linings good. and all of the sunroof assembly that weighs about 20 kg up there. >Other: >Deleted AC with all the components good >Light Redtop race battery (where to locate, maybe behind passenger what size? I used a 26 aH battery. 9 kg. but in cold finnland perhaps the 38 aH would be better suited. >seat to save some weight also in the battery cable?) behind the seat could be a good idea, but on my car that is where the fire bottle goes (I have a SPA fire supression system). if the battery is small enough it mght fit next to it. John
Me neither before I removed the ECU had the sticker on it. Look here: http://www.ds-motorsport.de/ No I think it was the 1.8l versio which people said is ok on S14.net. Have to try it and see how it feels. No picture yet, but I'll post when I get some. It's based on some familiar sports item that my friends company is producing. They just have carbon fibre pipes in the warehouse and there I had the idea of using it, since it was free also. Ok, then maybe the powerflex items in here also. True, I didn't have time yet to see how everything will fit in there, but I was goind to use the standard splash tray as template and produce some items to duct the air in the middle of the disc. Yes I have seen the flossman splitter, I think it might be too expensive at the moment, but on the otherhand I could live without these for a while and save up for the flossman thingy Typo, so I have OMP wheel and then the e30 OMP hub with extra OMP spacer (50mm) to get the wheel closer. Picture here Don't have full assembled picture at the moment, but here is the main hoop: picture Here is the front and side bars that still need to be welded: Picture Yes! that's it . No, something like this: Example Good point. I thinks the smaller one as this will not see winter and is always parked inside in the warm. Anyway, thanks for the comments.
